on June 11 we got an email requesting further proof that we were living still living together in Canada, me as a visitor, they wanted proof of his income so far this year, and the money for my landing fee. So far it is just over 6 weeks since we got that email we sent in further proof and the fee about 10 days after it was asked for. Does anyone know how much longer we might have to wait?

Each visa office has a different "BF" date (bring forward date)
That is basically when they request information from you, they will recheck your file to see if you sent in what they requested. Sometimes it could be 2 weeks, a month, 60 days... Depends on your visa office, so unfortunately we cant say.

Ok thanks. It is just so hard not knowing. I have a job offer but I know I cannot work until they approve me. The issue is that a police background check will have to be made for the job and that will take 4-6 weeks after I can be offered the job which I assume I can't be officially offered the job until I am approved. If I can't land sometime in August or early September I probably won't be able to have the job since the need that creates the job is time sensitive. We have been using a representative and they told me we had 45 days to get the new proof in, would that likely mean that their bring forward date was 45 days out?

Thats very possible. For the background check, is it a Canadian background check? I had to do one for other reasons and went to the police station and had it in 3 days. Dont know if that helps?

Yes it is a Canadian background check that would be done, since I have been here as a visitor for the last nearly 2 years. The job would be a Nanny for foster children so the background check is something that must be done. I worked with people with disabilities and foster children before I came to Canada and had to do huge background checks for those jobs as well and they did take about 4-6 weeks depending on which job you talk about. The job would be a great fit for me with my background which is why they would love to offer me the job but they know and understand I can't work until I get approval they are just hoping I get approval soon so that they background check can be done in time for them to have someone in place in September, otherwise they will have to hire someone else.

Is it a "criminal record check with a vulnerable sector search" or a background check? There's a difference.

The former is usually for jobs with vulnerable populations (e.g. healthcare, childcare, seniors, etc). All you need is provide proof of address, photo ID, have your fingerprints taken at the police station.

The later often includes employment and reference checks, etc and may be more detailed. This is the type people undergo for federal/provincial gov't jobs, high level security clearance jobs, etc.

Is there a reason they can not begin the checks now while waiting for your PR paperwork? The cost is usually paid by the would-be employee anyway.

Is this what the employer is asking: http://www.rcmp.gc.ca/cr-cj/steps-etapes-eng.htm

Bella, Both myself and my potential employer would like to know if the ministry could start a background check, I assume it is for vulnerable populations as that is what I basically would be working with and have done in the past that took so long for clearance to come through. I am afraid to have them start the process if it might hurt my application for PR. But if it can be started without hurting my application then Yes I would love to have it get started since then I know I will have a job as soon as I can land as a PR. Does anyone know if having the ministry start a background check for employment would hurt my PR application? Thank you anyone who might have advice.

I also keep wondering if since CIC does a check on every PR applicant if that would be enough for the Ministry in this case. I wish my former employer would have given me the proof I passed the Washington State background check for working with vulnerable Children. I passed it for sure since that job was supervising foster children visiting their birth parents and I did not have a supervisor with me ever, just a boss who paid me and made sure my reports were good enough. I was told that background check was only Good for Washington State so the boss would not give it to me, never mind that I had not lived outside of Washington at that point for 40 years and that I had passed several other background checks over the years as well.

I see what you mean. Hmm... I do not know whether or not it can hurt your PR application. As you don't have PR yet, if the employer wanted to offer you the job now, they first have to go through Service Canada to obtain a positive LMIA (labor market impact assessment) after which you can apply for a 'closed' work permit. This would be the proper process, so I don't see how it could affect your PR.

But it appears, the idea is to offer the job once you have PR (correct me if I'm wrong), hence no need for a LMIA? In any case, you are right in ensuring nothing hurts your PR application.

Best to ask an immigration lawyer - some of them offer free consultations or you could pay for 1 session to seek advice.

The offer would already be a job if I had my PR already. But since I don't we are in a holding pattern until I get my PR. I would not really want a Close Work Permit anyway as I do not see myself doing this work for more than a year or two. I am in my 50's and someday hope to have grandchildren who I can visit and really be part of their lives at that point I am not sure if I would also want to work as a nanny/support person for children who have very challenging issues, as many foster children do, because I would want that part of me to be there for my family. All mine and my husbands kids (6) are 20-30 years old so that time will come sooner rather than later in our lives.
