My daughter-in-law from iceland came to Canada on a student visa. She got pregnant and married to my son and became a permanent resident. They separated in january 2023 and she then moved in with her boyfriend in October. They recently became engaged and are now planning on getting married, in Iceland July 3, 2024. She and my son are not yet divorced. Can she do this?

Nothing to do with Canadian immigration. This is about laws in Iceland.

Is this for real? I'm sure even in Iceland that would be illegal..

I got this..

Only additional comment I'd make is that if they are not doing a 'real' (legal) marriage but just a commitment ceremony, they can do whatever they want; and they can call it a marriage when it ain't. (Well, assuming Iceland doesn't forbid that...)

I read recently that Iceland has one of the lowest marriage rates/highest rate of kids whose parents aren't married. This doesn't mean the parents aren't around, or even together, just not bothering to get (real) married.
