Do people get rejected for citizenship? What are the common reasons? Sorry if there's already a thread on this. Also, does the processing time sometimes hugely exceed the normal time because of background checks or something?

Thanks.

Yes, of course, some applications for citizenship are denied. Any applicant who fails to meet the qualifications for citizenship or who is prohibited will be denied. Even some who meet the qualifications at the time they apply will be denied if sometime prior to the oath they fail to meet the qualifications or become subject to a prohibition. Example of the latter is anyone arrested for an indictable offense after applying but before taking the oath; this typically arises out of a domestic violence accusation, or other type of assault charge, or a driving under the influence offense.

More than a few applicants can indeed encounter lengthy delays in the processing of their application, again for various reasons but questions about meeting the presence requirement or potential criminal charges posing possibility of a prohibition tend to be the more common ones. That said, security concerns leading to delayed security clearances also affects a small number of applicants.

Other problems which can result in a negative outcome typically arise from a failure to respond to IRCC requests or to appear for scheduled events.

As @spyfy noted, the particular requirements for citizenship are discussed in specific topics.
