If you’ve been turned around in Canada when trying to get through the port of entry with a study permit LOI, can you please share which airport and whether you had to pay for your return flight?

Usually the airline just won't let you on the plane. US students may be the only ones who may get lucky and not get asked but airlines are usually not eilling to risk habing people refused entry. You may be asked to provide evidence that your studies are not only online.

No experience of being denied entry but doubt anything comes for free and even if an airline follows instructions resulting from a denied entry suspect the airline will attempt to recover the cost from an individual at some point even after returning an individual. Maybe an airline can answer such a theoretical question although currently airlines have very specific instructions who can board or not board, not foolproof of course.
