Reinstating PR status, land border crossing with 2 US citizen kids

Update to those who could use the info:
I flew to Buffalo and had a friend pick us up from the airport to cross the border to Canada.
They did question my expired PR card at the first stop. They sent me inside for more questioning. They said if I plan to renew my pr card that I should keep my days in Canada and not plan to go back to US so soon. They did inform me that they could report it, but they didn't. They looked into the system and informed me that I actually do have a valid (until 2020) PR card It was sent to me when I applied to renew but I never received this. (this was before my wedding and I have no recollection of this, but I believe them).
A few minutes and a bathroom break later, they let me go. It was stressful. I know it could have gone differently. But I'm thankful it went the way it did. Now waiting out the days until I meet my residency obligation.
