Hello everyone,

I'm currently staying in Canada with an open work permit that expires in December 2020.
My passport also expires on the same date.

My PR processing is estimated to complete sometime in 2021.
I would like to extend my stay by getting a visitor record and wait until I get my PR so that I can work again.

I have a few questions regarding applying for a visitor record:

1) Do I need to renew my passport before applying for visitor record?

The application tells me that I will need a photocopy of my passport, but I'm not sure if this passport needs to cover the duration of the visitor record.
I will be getting my passport renewed soon but it's going to take some time so I would like to know if it's possible to apply for my visitor record first while I wait for my new passport.

2) Which copy of passport do I submit?

The website tells me that they need a photocopy of my passport page with stamp indicating the most recent entry to Canada.
If I renew my passport, this information would no longer be there.

I am confused about which photocopy of passport I would need to send them.
The soon-to-expire passport with stamps showing my most recent entry (which was back in 2019),
or the new passport that wouldn't have any stamps on it.

3) Is my deadline precisely 30 days before my permit expires?

The government website tells me following:
"If you want to extend your stay as a visitor or change your status (from international student or worker to visitor for example), you should apply at least 30 days before your current status expires. "

The word 'should' is vague for me. Is this just a recommendation or will my application not be valid if I submit a few days later than the 30 days mark (ex. 20 days before my permit expires)?

1. You can apply with your current passport but the visitor record won't be issued for longer than the passport is valid. If you renew your passport during the application process you can send the new details via a webform.

2. If you apply with the new passport then attach a photocopy of the old passport stamp with an explanation letter attached.

3. You're correct; "should" is a strong recommendation but it's not a hard legal deadline.

Is there a reason you don't want to apply for a bridging work permit so you can keep working?

Thank you for the detailed response. Seems very reasonable!

I quit my job last month, and I was thinking of waiting for COVID waves to weaken before I return to work (probably not until next year) as I am quite concerned about my health. I have enough funds to stay afloat without working for a couple years as well.

You don't need to be working to be eligible for a bridging work permit, if I were you I'd apply for it just in case.

Good point, but I just looked it up and it says I'm not eligible for bridging work permit as I live in Quebec
I do have a CSQ so I guess I can apply for employer-specific work permit if I get another job offer.
