my son goes to Grade-2

Private school ranges from $10k to $24k /annum ( In toronto,North York,Markham,Richmond Hill and othe nearby areas..)

There is Sri Satya Sai Baba school (private school) very affordable ($3000/annum) but getting admission is difficult since they don't take many students, when we contacted them they said admission for sept-2010 session is closed. At the end of year or early next year we can try for Sept-2011 session.

Apts are from $900 to $1300 (varies by areas as well in Toronto and Greater Toronto Area)

I will keep sharing my exp for the benefit of all fresn arouns

charmeuse - I didnot like the comment "there's nothing like hearing it from the horse's mouth" .

Thanks SRV. Certainly $10K -$24K per year is a lot for me. Do you think the difference between public and private is a huge one?

srv - Do not get offended, that's just a saying(very common in the western world), it means like hearing it directly from the source, which only implies that there will be 100% truth.

Difference is there betn private and public.. I don't know the level or depth

In private schools they have lots of activity, less students per teacher, more focused, more resources (bcoz they are charging you a lot) and their course content is much more than what you will find in public schools

For 1 yr my son went to private school in USA which was catholic school and fees was under $5000/annum there I saw the difference..

Max- thanks for helping me understand about the saying :)
charmeuse - no hard feelings :) I was not aware of such saying .. it happens some time :)

I will continue to share my day to day experience... I am still waiting for my shipment to arrive from USA... so still just managing with limited supplies :)

Good luck to all.

Oops! srv, I guess the phrase is not as common as I thought it was. Thanks, max_lee for that excellent explanation. It's just what I meant.

Do continue to share your experiences, srv, when you have time. Looking forward to them.

I am just near to getting my PR. I children are studying in Delhi Public School (people living in delhi know the name very well). Now I am worried by SRV comments. If there is lot of difference in education level, then how the people of canada become Engineers, Scientist, Doctors etc.

Should we leave children in India and send them in a hostel?

sulekhakulashari -

I think my message is going in wrong direction...
There is always a change when you move from one place to other,
I have mentioned the diff betn India,USA and Canada education and no one can deny that, you will find engrs, doctors coming out from every part of the world.. so you should not worry. I never mentioned that education is not enough here the point was the DIFFERENCE which we (coming from India or USA or other part) will see.

Yes when you land here you and your kids will find huge diff in the course content (i am only ref here elementary.. I heard in High school they put lot of stress ).

In Ireland kids start school only at the age of 7, so if any Indian goes there whos child is 6 yrs old and studying for almost past 3yrs in India, will find himself/herself in home in Ireland till he/she is 7 yrs :)...

My intent of sharing my exp was to let you guys be prepared for the change.

Relaxed and continue planning for your PR, Wish you all the best

Hi All,

Don't get confused and worried! Yes when we are prepared for a change......We have to accept the new way of life and living....and adopt the new culture... No place is same a like US in not like India and Uk is not like US and Canada is not like any other..... You can observe different cultures in India it self.... every state and town has different way of teaching and schools.

When you go to different place try to learn and adopt new things... Its not easy but it can be done.

Wish you all Good Luck....

In India the students are burdened by studies, which is above their understanding & calibre & age.
For example few things taught at 11th can be understood at 12th level.

I might be taking this thread in a different direction.. what's more important.. syllabus based studies or education leading to personality development..?

I second that...
I have been to [nearly] all parts of the world & observed that the Canadian Education system is indeed better. So is that of US [absolutely no difference in Canadian & US systems] and many of the European countries.

I lived in Dubai for a long time, in fact I found Dubai's Schooling system was far better than that of India's & many other similar nations. Nothing unpatriotic about it... just that Dubai's & Canada's schools are surely making our kids better individuals, human beings & citizens. There is an emphasis on overall individual development here, rather than mere number crunchers.

It's all about individual perspective, I guess. I'd always appreciate that '2yrs. back' studies [as the OP said] than overburdening my child with un-necessities of the world in an early stage. What's the point of teaching 'Matrices' to a 3rd grader? Or literary mumbo-jumbo to a 4th? I'm content that they do it to a 7th or 8th grader here.

BTW: The Public Schools are damn good here; and one just doesn't require to enroll in the Catholic ones.

Qorax

Ps.: Thanks SRV for sharing your Canadian experiences. We do need such info here anyway.

U better take them to Canada, if u care for their upbringing & individuality. This is why we all are into this PR process... to give our families & kids a better life[style].

I'd go a step further... I'd say, "what they are teaching in the 10th grade ought to be dealt in the Degree level".

Did anyone hear a 10th grader jumping-off the roof [committed suicide] in Canada or the US or in other parts of the developed world?

To add my 2 cents,

I am not sure about canada but my friends who moved from US say they are almost the same, though the US is slightly higher(again differs from state to state in the US)

I moved to US when my kids were very young, infact my second one started from Preschool in US. As I am seeing my kids go from Elementary to Middle school to Secondary, there is a lot of change as far as the syllabus. In fact the change from Elementary to Middle school was a big leap and heard as one moves from Middle to Secondary the jump is even higher. So do not get worried about the standard compared to India to US to Canada, I can say this as I was educated in India and felt what they thought here in Grades 1-5 were in no way close to what kids do in India from Std 1-5, but I am seeing the standard increasing drastically after Grade 6, also when I compare myself to my kids who are schooling here in the US, I am seeing they are more confidant and are outgoing even though the curriculam which is done in India is higher, BTW I did my entire education in CBSE which was considered to be higher than state boards or ICSE.

Bottomline do not be over concerned, kids here are more practical and get prepared for what they want for their future as the system teaches them to be independent in their thoughts and make them more outgoing, I am sure other members who have kids already in school in the US or Canada agree with what I am saying.
