I feel watching a lot of TV helps(no Kidding). If you can understand the conversations and other phrases that are unique to cultures etc, that would help you. Watch a lot of American as well as British documentaries and sitcoms. Entertaining and you get to learn a lot as well :)

You are right about watching TV shows and movies. Specially if you want to understand the accents.
 
Please work on your IELTS. I got my score in the 5th attempt and my score increased from 412 to 472 so there is hope.

From June onwards, Francophones and the ones with Canadian siblings will get more points so their scores will increase. Cut off may also increase because of that.
