Hello! I’m sorry if this has been answered elsewhere. I just joined this site and I’m having a tough time navigating previous posts.

Sooo, I quit my job in order to go up to Canada this summer to marry my Canadian boyfriend. We will be getting married once I get up there and then we will be filing inland. Of course I will leave at the end of my 6 month allowed visit if for some reason I don’t get an extension.

My concern is I won’t be allowed into the country since I am unemployed. I do have a few thousand dollars in the bank, and my soon to be spouse makes enough money to support me.

How do I prove to the border crossing official that I can and will leave after 6 months if I am unemployed? I am educated and could easily get a job anywhere (I’m a teacher).

My worst fear is I won’t be allowed into the country. My boyfriend says I’m being silly because I’ve always been allowed in in the past and never overstated, but this will be my first time crossing as unemployed.

Also, how do I tell the border patrol official about planning to get married and filing inland? I want to be succinct without over sharing and looking nervous (which I very much am lol!)

All you have to say is you are visiting your boyfriend. My boyfriend came and went across the border several times when he was unemployed. His working holiday visa expired and then he applied for an ETA again right after and did some travel in both America and Canada and they let him back in on two separate locations, as well as a few times on the WHV while unemployed. Just don't bring a car full of all your furniture and make it look like you're moving.

All you have to say is you are visiting your boyfriend. My boyfriend came and went across the border several times when he was unemployed. His working holiday visa expired and then he applied for an ETA again right after and did some travel in both America and Canada and they let him back in on two separate locations, as well as a few times on the WHV while unemployed. Just don't bring a car full of all your furniture and make it look like you're moving.

Not sure, read some of these threads. Some people get in no problems, and others get questioned. All you can do is tell the truth. If they ask how long, say a few months. Have you got any ties to American still if they ask?

Thank you for your help! I have family in the US and a few thousand dollars in the bank. I have no lease or own property or anything like that. Thank you again
