I found that answers to IMM 5285 question 2 and 12 can be very similar. Here's the question 2:

Did you and your sponsor go on outings and/or trips together?

And question 12

On a separate sheet of paper, provide any additional details of your current relationship that you believe would help to prove your relationship is genuine and continuing

I think every answer to question 2 can also be counted as answers to question 12. So, should I copy all my answers to question 2 over to my answers of question 12, i.e., copy the detailed description of all our outings/trips, into my answer of question 12?

Obviously this will create a lot of duplication which I'm not sure if it will bore the visa officer. However, if I wouldn't make duplication, but instead, in my answer to question 12, ask the visa officer to refer to my answer in question 2, I'm worried that the visa officer may have ignored my answer in questions 2 (because they are so busy), and also wouldn't bother going back to read my answer to question 2 (also because they are too busy). Am I worried too much? Please share your opinion and experience.

Thank you very much.

How I did it is I simply used the same piece of paper for both questions. Just put in the space "please see additional paper". For question 2 I listed the outings and trips specifically. For question 12 I put the additional details describing our relationship. Then the officer can't miss either one :)

They don't have to be the same.
For 2, describe outings and trips. 12 is your chance to describe your relationship as a whole, to give an overview. Some people put a timeline here. It is usually an essay. They want additional details, not exactly the same ones, though you can reference trips you took.

For example, if you described several dates and outings in detail for 2, you can just say 'we dated for several months in 2011, then took a few trips together in 2012' or whatever.

In my case, for the question #12 (or the equivalent since I was using IMM 5490 for outland applications), my husband and I separately wrote down our own account of how our relationship developed/how we fell in love/what our future plans are/etc. Nothing too complicated, just in our own words and we tried to keep it one page for each of our "essay". Actually now that I went back and read what we wrote for this question, it's embarrassingly cheesy haha

@Aquakitty: thank you very much for your reply, but I'm still very confused how you actual handled this. I would appreciate it if you could explain it in more details, maybe with an example.

@canadianwoman, xabibella: thank you very much for your inspiring answer, it's helpful.
