Hey all,

I'm currently writing an application with my common law spouse to sponsor her into Canada. We're currently living together in Poland, where we've lived since 2017. We're filing under the Family Class. I have a couple questions:

1. We have a joint bank account together (Scotiabank). Is sufficient proof to give them void cheques from each of us that have the same account information? Or do we need some kind of letter from the bank? Should I include a bank statement as well even though it only has my name on it?

2. How many credit card statements should I send in for proof that I'm supporting the household? I could do a whole years worth, but I'm worried they might trim the application down if I do that. Would it be better to just give 3 maybe? I'll also be sending in a couple of invoices from Ikea and an Electronics store.

3. When they say the date in which you entered a common law relationship, this is the date when you've been living together for 1 year, correct? Or is it the date in which you started living together?

4. Concerning the Additional Family Information form (imm5406), does my partner (the principle applicant) need to list me (the sponsor) as her spouse? And she lists her applicable family members whether they are accompanying her to Canada or not, right?

Thank you very much for your help! It is much appreciated.

Best,
Harry

1. You need the actual bank statements showing both names. A joint account statement should not list just one person.

2. What proof category is that for?

3. One year from the date you started living together.

4. She needs to fill out every field, no exceptions.

Thank you for your response!

For whatever reason, our bank statements still only show my name. I'm not sure if this is due to the fact that we turned a single account into a joint account, but the style of the bank statements hasn't changed. If the void cheques aren't good, I'm gonna try to ask the bank for a letter that states we have a joint account.

The credit card statements are for the documentary evidence of financial support between me and the principle applicant (section 7c)

If you are asking the bank for a letter, make sure it specifies the date she was added and if she has a bank card for it. You may as well include the void cheques as well.

What are you trying to show with the credit card statements? Financial support would be proof of you paying the rent/mortgage, paying all of the bills, transferring her money etc. Does the credit card show that? Skip the furniture receipts. They aren't a financial support proof.

Ok, we'll get that info from the bank, thank you!

We were advised by an immigration lawyer to include the furniture receipts, as they help with both proof of address and supporting the household. She also told us to print off the credit card statements and to highlight the different household charges (Grocery bills, internet bills, cell phone bills, etc)

Proof of address, yes. Proof of support, that's a stretch. If the credit card statements show bill payments, then include some of those.
