Hello

I recently became a Canadian Citizen, however I haven't applied for a passport yet. I'm traveling to America soon and I'm curious about how I gain entry coming back. Before, I used my PR card.

I'm traveling with a EU Passport & have visa. Do I need to bring my proof of Citizenship with me? Will that be enough proof to be allowed back in?

Thank you

Citizenship Certificate is NOT a travel document. You cannot use it to enter if you are passport is not exempted for Visa free entry to Canada.
Either apply for a passport here in Canada OR apply for passport from a Consulate in USA.

If you are travelling by car, then, in my opinion, you'll likely be allowed back into Canada with your citizenship certificate. (No guarantees, though.) If travelling by air, you likely won't be allowed to board a plane destined for Canada.

What about enhanced driver licence or a Nexus card. Can he enter on that without applying for passport

WRONG!!!

Yes you can enter using your citizenship certificate. The officer will verify your identity and allow you in.

EDL maybe yes but nexus requires passport to be carried along with it and if they ask for pp and u can't show then nexus membership can be terminated. By the way, you can't apply nexus without a passport. If you use your old passport with nexus and u are already a citizen then travelling without updating the new pp information can lead to cancellation of nexus membership

Good point i did not know.
I dont understand why people apply for redundant documents like EDL or Nexus when its always a risk to be asked for passport just in case. Why spend extra money in extra document.

Any reason why one should keep EDL or nexus and leave passport at home to increase risk of deny at port

EDL can be carried alone as far as i know. however, nexus membership requires you to carry passport all the time with nexus card. They might not check pp all the time however, if the ask and if you couldn't provide it, then your nexus membership can be revoked. It is a requirement to carry immigration documents like PP/PR card etc along with nexus card.

check the following link:

Under Penalties :
Failure to carry or produce any additional identification documents that may be required for entry into Canada or the U.S., i.e. passport, work or study permit, permanent residency card, etc.;

NEXUS go thru different faster lanes at the border. I dont think they even see an officer in most cases. Travelers are pre-screened from both sides and considered low-risk trusted travelers.

Please see my reply with the link mentioned above for clarification :)

But airline might not allow you on the flight. Its happened before.....

This depends on how you are trying to enter Canada. If By Air, and you do not hold a visa exempt passport, the airline will deny you boarding so you will have no opportunity to see an officer for verification. If by land, then you do have a shot to plead your case.

yeah i read it before,.. were planning to drive from montreal to new hampshire but our passport is not ready yet. some people said i can use my old passport with US visa and return with Canadian citizenship cert. but i dont take the risk

by airplane: if visa exempt passport, you are fine, if not, airline people won't allow you to board if you don't have pr card
by land border: citizenship certificate is fine
