Hi all,

I have a question regarding the parents and grandparents sponsorship. I have been living in Canada since January 2018, so almost three years. I have been employed full time, but I was still paid by my foreign company. Only last year I became a permanent resident and I am getting paid in Canada. So the first two years I didn't pay taxes in Canada, but I paid taxes in another country. Am I eligible to apply for this sponsorship? i have the income, but I dont have three years of tax assessment in Canada.

Thank you!
No, you are not eligible. You need Canadian tax returns for the last three years to qualify.

FYI - you should have filed taxes in Canada for 2018 and 2019. Since you are living in Canada, it's required that you file taxes and declare your worldwide income. Doesn't matter that your employer is outside of Canada and that you paid tax in another country. You were still required to file a return in Canada for these years.

Thank you very much for your message. I was a temporary resident for those two years. Should I still have filed a tax return? And can I still do it now for those years? Also, I have a partner who has filed tax returns for the last three years. Can I add him as a co signer? And would I able to apply for the sponsorship?
Yes, you should have filed tax returns You were a resident of Canada.

If you have lived with your partner continuously for at least one year, then your partner can be a co-signer. Assuming you have lived together for a full year and are common law, you need to be filing your taxes as common law as well. When did you start living together?

Hello, the sponsorship program will be started from 13 OCT 2020. When the parents will be in Canada, what will be their status? Are they visitor or they will be treated as a permanent resident? Thanks

If the parents are in Canada after the PR application/sponsorship is approved, then they will be PR.

They are still visitors if they visit Canada before this application is completed.

For 2020 PGP which 3 years Income will be considered ??

1) 2017- 2018- 2019 OR
2) 2018- 2019- 2020

Its bit confusing as on the Immigration and Citizenship Canada website it states - option 2 - (2018- 2019 and 2020-- as it states we need to send NOA for 2020 at a later date when we actually receive it)

thanks for your reply. Would you please provide me the link where it has been stated that tax return from 2018 to 2020 need to be submitted?

for Quebec residents, do we need to show 2018, 2019, and 2020 TAX returns?
