Hi everyone!
I am applying to sponsor my common-law partner who is a US citizen. We have lived together since November 2015 but are struggling to provide the appropriate documentation based on the Document Checklist provided by CIC. The checklist says that if we live together we must provide 2 of the following: joint lease/rental agreement, shared utilities, other important documents.
Some details:
- I moved in to my partner's apartment in late 2015. This was 6 months into his lease so, I never signed any rental agreement or anything official. We stayed at that apartment until the lease ended in mid 2016 (7 months living together).
- We entered an official domestic partnership through NYC in February 2016.
- Our second apartment we moved in to, we co-signed that lease so we do have that documentation from mid 2016 - mid 2017 (to date that is 10 months of this lease alone).
We have lived together for 17 months, and counting, but based on lease agreements, we technically have 7 months unaccounted. This leaves us with only 10 months documented through leases, just shy of the 1 year threshold if we apply at the end of March. I do have my personal cell phone bill and tax returns, etc. that were mailed to address #1 (where I wasn't on the lease). But, I'm worried that if I don't have those official rental agreement documents, it won't fly based on the checklist requirements.
Any thoughts on solutions for this? Will it suffice to share our current lease, the domestic partnership certificate and shared mail? Unfortunately, we don't have any official documents (like drivers licenses or insurance plans) that account for the time before we signed a lease otherwise, we would ditch the lease option all together. We have the utilities part down since we are both users on gas/electric/cable.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts
