I have a question about upfront medical. My husband (Canadian citizen) and I (American citizen) are about to apply for sponsorship for permanent residency and we are going through the document checklist to make sure we have everything and one of the last things I notice is "upfront medical." Do I need to have that done before I apply and send it with my application, or wait for CIC to request the medicals from me?

Yes, it's a good idea to have this done before you send in your application. The medical is only good for a year so have this done as close to sending out your application as you can. The doctor will forward your exam results to CIC and they will give you a form to include with your application. It has to be a Panel Physician on the list.

Thank you for the reply. Is it possible to wait for CIC to request the medical? Or is that not recommended?

You can, but I really don't have any experience in what that means for the processing of your application. I have just read that it makes the processing smoother if you send it with the application.
Maybe a more experienced member can answer that. Sorry!

The general consensus seems to be that waiting to send in anything could potentially hold up your file since who knows what pile you'll end up in and when they'll get back to you.

Unless you have serious concerns about there being a hold up on your file, I'd just do it in advance.

As well I have seen some get sent back...not many but if they want they can..."The people you want to sponsor must get a medical exam. Gather the applications, supporting documents and proof that the medical exam has been done."...that's from CIC....it cam delay things if you don't do it upfront...
