Hello.

I am on IFHP program right now. My dentist said I have to have a CT scan for one of my tooth, because they suspecting it's cracked and it hurts while biting. Is it covered under IFHP? I called Blue Cross, and they said to contact IRCC, I was half an hour on the line and then heard that the lines are overloaded and got disconnected.

I don't believe it's covered. I believe it's the same as provincial coverage. Only urgent dental care is covered and this won't fall under that classification of urgent care.

Hopefully someone else can confirm.

I find confusing, what do they see as urgent dental care? Because my dentist wanted me to have an emergency root canal, and root canals aren't covered, but if it's urgent, it should be, right?

Urgent is basically emergency care that would need to be provided by a hospital. For example, let's say you are in a car accident where you jaw / teeth are damaged or injured and you need hospital care.

Very strange that they are recommending a CT scan and not the circular x-ray especially for a cracked tooth. IFHP doesn't deal with complex dental care. A large proportion of Canadians have no dental care so any dental care is better than nothing.

I had a filling done recently and it started to hurt after that. I have autoimmune disorder and I think the pulp might not healed properly because of my hyperthyroidism. But is the circular x-ray can show deeper cracks too?

Your dentist would honestly be the best person to comment on that.

Good luck and hope this gets resolved soon.

She's the one who recommended the Ct scan. But I don't think she's very competent and CT scan is 500 dollars with 200 for consultation and 300 for the scan. If the circular x-ray could resolve it instead, I would get that.

I would consider finding a new dentist and getting someone better based on referrals / reviews in your area.

Yeah, I already got a consultation with another dentist and she noticed gum recession that the previous one just ignored, when I mentioned that something is not right.

Gum recession may not have been something the dentist commented on to be fair unless it was very severe.

IFHP dental plan is really meant for basic dental care for people who have not had dental care for many years. Mostly extractions and cavities plus treatment of infections. It is not meant to provide advanced dental care. If the general population has no access to fully funded dental care it would be very hard to justify providing advanced dental care for only refugee claimants and not citizens and PRs.

Would add that getting asylum from Poland after you’ve spent years in Canada doing IEC will be very difficult.

I had gum recession. The procedure cost $2000. I HIGHLY doubt the Government will cover .
It’s not an emergency. I was given a choice to do it or not .
