Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and the status verification process between CRA and IRCC.

I am a Permanent Resident. I am in Canada and I plan to apply for Canada Child Benefit in 2026. At that time, I will not yet have met the 730-day PR residency obligation.

I understand that CRA may verify immigration status with IRCC when processing CCB applications. My concern is the following:
  • When CRA contacts IRCC to confirm PR status, does IRCC also review PR residency obligation compliance (730 days) during this verification
In other words, can a CCB application trigger an IRCC review of PR residency days?

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with first-hand experience or reliable sources on this topic.

Thank you in advance.

No, 'residency' for tax purposes (and for specific purposes of certain benefits) are not linked to residency obligation compliance. Separate concepts in law and practice, and everyone gets this.
