Hi all,

My GF and I moved into our apartment on March 4, 2018. However, our lease is dated from 28th Feb 2018 to 28th Feb 2019. If I tell them that my partner and I entered the common-law relationship on March 4, 2019 (which is correct) that would mean we have no proof of living together on the days between Feb 28 and Mar 4.

What should I do? Should I just say we entered the common-law relationship on Feb 28 rather than Mar 4? I know that would be a lie but the only way around it would be to sign another year's lease which I'm not prepared to do (on month-to-month now, which has no paper lease)

I think you can just attach letter of explanation on why the date of the lease was dated different and the reason like for example, because you paid on this specific date (Feb28,2018) so the landlord put the said date on the lease agreement but you started common law March 4, 2018 and that’s the date you have to enter on the application.

Thanks! Would that letter have to be notarized? I'm guessing if not, the officer might think I'm trying to pull a fast one (though for 4 days, doubtful)

If you want to notarized it’s okay but honestly all my letter of explanation submitted to IRCC hasn’t notarized so I think it doesn’t matter as long as you explain upfront the discrepancy.

Not quite sure what your concern is. You became common-law March 4th, so you can't put anything else. The fact that the lease ended Feb 28th doesn't matter; it is typical to go month-to-month after a 1 year lease. You must have other proofs you are submitting that go beyond that date.

Um, not really? All of my proofs are dated before - I don't have anything from the last few weeks. Hence my concern.

What actual common-law proofs do you have?
Apart from the lease, we have plenty of documents to both of us that are at the same address. Additionally, there's our driver's licences - same address, as well as bank statements to the same address. We don't have a joint account though, as we've never really needed one. We've got photos of us as well, plus a letter from her father confirming our relationship. None of that is dated after Feb 28th, though.

So just wait until you have your next bank statements or utility bills from after Feb 28th.
