Hi I am moving to Winnipeg in January to pursue my Master's at Univ of Manitoba. I am from South India and is not used to winter climate. I would appreciate if someone with experience living in Winnipeg or Manitoba would advice me on the type of clothing I need to buy.
Should I make some basic purchases from India.
I was looking for Pure Merino wool thermals and found http://prrems.com/mens-wool-long-johns-thermal & http://prrems.com/mens-wool-full-sleeve-thermal in an Indian store. Should I get it?
What are the other items I should purchase from India and items I need to get after reaching Winnipeg ? :

Perhaps you can take a look at the Canada goose website and compare your local stores to find suitable coats that can withstand outside temperatures below minus 30 centigrade?

Winnipeg is a friendly city but really cold in winter

You can buy some basics in India, but you'll find in Winnipeg anything you'll need (no too cheap probably)

You won't expend too much time outdoor but when temperature drop -30°C or lower you'll be in trouble really soon.

You can buy these Merino girt a layer by now, but you'll need:

- first thermal layer: shirt and trousers Merino or synthetic
- Pullover, shirts, trousers
- insulation layer. Thinsulate, primaloft,
- external layer. Waterproof and windproof

Insulation and external are usually in the same big coats/bibs.

You need boots (rated to -40°), thermal socks, hats...

Coming to Canada in winter is hard, I recommend you have a few days shopping before classes starts

You definitely need some basic purchases from India (like that thermal). But none of the items from India would be suitable for Winnipeg winter. So don't spend too much in India, bring enough layers of sweaters and jackets to survive for a week and buy quality jackets and boots from here (look for brands like north face, Columbia). you might need approx 500$ for your winter gears here.
