LANDED..........
29-May-2014
We currently live in New Jersey and planning to complete the landing mid of April 2014 (as the visa is expiring mid of June). I want to drive from New Jersey to Niagara Falls and complete the landing and proceed to Toronto, stay for a couple of days and return. I do have a couple of queries and appreciate if someone who has gone through this routine can answer. Thanks for the help.

1) Is it advisable to drive your own car (SUV) and let them know at the border that I am here to complete the landing but will move only after 6-8 months? I am planning to include the car in the Goods to Follow list. Would this suffice or will I be forced to pay the duty and other formalities for vehicle import?
2) By driving in my own car, do I run the risk of not being allowed to apply for a PR card as I intend to return to the US soon after landing?
3) If I am not allowed to apply for the PR card, what travel document do I need to return to Canada again?
4) Would I be better off to take a flight rather from Newark to Toronto and do the landing, apply for PR card, this way I don't have to tell them that I am going back to the US. We intend to book two one way tickets to avoid trouble.
5) What should be the value of items added to the Goods to follow list? Is it the original purchase value or the current value (say for example for a car, is it the purchase value or the current value after applying depreciation?

Put the car in goods to follow list.
2) By driving in my own car, do I run the risk of not being allowed to apply for a PR card as I intend to return to the US soon after landing? No.
3) If I am not allowed to apply for the PR card, what travel document do I need to return to Canada again? You can return using the signed COPR.
4) Would I be better off to take a flight rather from Newark to Toronto and do the landing, apply for PR card, this way I don't have to tell them that I am going back to the US. We intend to book two one way tickets to avoid trouble. Absolutely not. Don't waste your money.
5) What should be the value of items added to the Goods to follow list? Is it the original purchase value or the current value (say for example for a car, is it the purchase value or the current value after applying depreciation? Actual value in Canadian dollars should be good. The CBSA isn't worried about all items on the Goods to follow list except for jewelry and vehicle (mostly the really expensive stuff). Other than that, CBSA officer did not even look at my list.

I did my landing last week. Hope this helps.

I completed my landing last Saturday - March 8, 2014. US to Canada and back to US.

Here is my detailed landing experience:
