Proof of Marriage - EE Joint Application

Hello everyone,

I am an MBA Student from Canada and I have recently graduated. I am planning to apply for my PR just after my marriage as I have more than enough points for the Express entry draw. I want to be the primary application and my soon to be wife would be dependent. She has also given IELTS and has 5 years of experience. I have calculated our joint CRS score and it is more than the cutoff.

My questions are:
1. What proof do I need to show for our marriage? Is a marriage certificate enough?
2. Do we also need give other proofs such as wedding invitation copy, photos etc?

The reason I am asking this is that we are not having a function due to COVID. It's just a couple of family members. So I am confused whether a marriage certificate would be enough or not.

If you were a Citizen and intending to Sponsor your spouse to become a Citizen then you might need those in an embassy interview/ file.

For Express entry even common in law partners paper does the job, with other proofs.
So yes if you get a Legal certificate of marriage you will be fine.

To validate marital status claims
Document requirements

• This document is requested only when marital status is listed as married.
• The marriage must be valid under the law of the country where it took place and under Canadian law.
  • A marriage performed in an embassy or consulate must comply with the law of the host country where it took place, not the country of nationality of the embassy or consulate.
• If the applicant married in Canada, a copy of the marriage certificate issued by the province or territory where the marriage took place must be provided.
• If the applicant married outside Canada, a copy of a legal certificate issued by the country, the territory or the region where the marriage took place must be provided.

Individuals who must submit this documentation

• The principal applicant

In common law partnership you shall provide a proof that you and spouse live together, have the same address, maybe a joint lease or rentals and a joint bank account. And or any other government paper that corroborate that you are in relationship.

2. Our PR process might take time. I will apply for PR in a couple of months, so I was thinking that I should apply for her tourist/open work permit simultaneously. Can I apply for both Tourist visa and Open work permit at the same time?
