Hi, everybody.

I am putting my sponsorship paperwork together for my wife' PR app, and on the list of supporting documents, it states "letter of employment." Now, I'm sending them copies of three years of taxes (we live in the US), so it should be clear I've been working steadily, but I was not aware that I needed to get a letter from my employer. As our move would be about a little under a year from now, I don't really want to bring the issue up at work, so I'd rather not have to get a letter. BUt I will if it is necessary. Is it?

Thanks!

I believe it is necessary.

You can explain to your employer that you're not moving any time in the near future, but you want your wife to have PR so that you can do it some time in the future if and when you want. As long as she "lands" as a PR (she can cross the border once and come right back) she can keep her PR as long as she is living with you, even if it's not in Canada.

Depending on how big your company is, it might not even be a big deal. I asked my HR department for my letter of employment and I don't think my bosses even knew. There are a bunch of different reasons you could need it, I think when I applied for car loans last year they wanted a letter of employment. Just because you ask for the letter doesn't mean you're leaving.

Isn't it just a letter stating period of employment, salary and hours? Employers issue these all the time for people getting mortgages, loans etc. Unless it's a really small company this is generally standard procedure for an HR dept. You should not need to provide any explanation as to what it is for. If you are in a small company where people are nosey just say its for the bank as you are thinking of buying a house or refinancing your mortgage etc.

exactly. your company doesn't need to know the reason why you need the letter. this is a pretty common request of employees. all you need to do is ask for a "proof of employment" letter, and tell them specifically what it must state. It is very common for banks, insurance companies or even car dealerships to need this, it's not going to send up any "red flags" that you are planning to immigrate and leave your job. It IS a required document for sponsors, so it's best to make sure it's included.

I didn't tell my employers anything just that i needed a letter of how long i have worked for them hourly pay, how many hours i worked yearly income. They didn't even ask and its a really small company, that likes to know every ones business LOL
