I am now married, and I am trying to sponsor my wife for her PR.

My previous common-law partner and I ended our relationship in December of 2020, but we decided to live until the rental agreement ends which was in April 2021. What should I consider that the common-law relationship had ended? Is it December of 2020 or April of 2021?

Thanks!

Hmmm... That's a bit messy (and a bit unusual). Since you shared a common address until April 2021, I think I would go with the April date but include an LOE to explain that your relationship technically ended in December but that you continued to live together until April.

Thanks a lot! I thought that would be the best. More information is better than none.

Also, would the duration of the current relationship be a determining factor for the immigration officer's decision?
I and my wife started our relationship in May but got married last week. I know that the relationship developed really fast, but there is no other reason than me finding my perfect partner. Should we hold on for a few months before we apply?

It can be. The marriage was fast. But if you provide strong evidence, then you should be OK.

Is your wife in Canada? What is her status in Canada? Did you have a full marriage ceremony with family members from both sides attending?

Thanks for your quick response.

I am a Japanese citizen with PR, and my wife is a Korean citizen with a work permit.
We were married in Canada only but will be submitting our marriage documents in Japan and Korea as well in October.

We did not have a full wedding ceremony since none of our family members live in Canada. We have taken a lot of pictures together throughout the summer though.

Could you advise me what we could do to submit as strong evidence of our legitimate marriage?

Do you live together now?
Have you combined your finances / bank accounts / credit cards?
Have you combined any property ownership?
Same for utilities?
Added each other to any insurance policies, etc?
Have you met each other's parents and/or siblings?

You need to overcome the short relationship / quick marriage and lack of a full wedding celebration.

We have lived together since September 1st.
We have joint bank account since September 1st.
Rental agreement under both names.
Her name is on my company's insurance coverage.
The current rented place has all the utilities covered.
Her last name is now changed to mine, and we will do the same for all three countries. (maybe this shows commitment too)

We have not met each others' families in person, but we have ofc talked to them via video calls.
