Hi All,

I am beginning the process of sponsoring my common law partner to Canada - we both are currently living in Florida.

I am pregnant (the baby is my partner's, of course), but I just reviewed the sponsorship forms and don't see anywhere to indicate a child that is not yet born. I figured I would attach a note from my dr/midwife indicating that I am pregnant to the Sponsor Questionnaire and that the due date is in Jan. This baby is one of the main reasons we would like to return to Canada - to be close to my family. I will include that info in a general statement that I will also attach to my sponsor questionnaire.

Any advice or suggestions?? Am I missing something??

you cannot add unborn baby into the forms.

yes, you can get a letter stating your current situation and attach to your application. are you a sponsor? if yes, it should go with the sponsored person application.

thanks - I wasn't sure if I was missing something. I am the sponsor. If the application isn't approved in time we will have to add the baby to my partner's application, but I wasn't sure if there was a place to mention it upfront - kind of a big detail, so I will definitely add something to my sponsor questionnaire that covers it.

Are you a citizen who was born in Canada or immigrated there and became a citizen? If so and your baby ends up being born outside Canada before your partner lands and becomes a permanent resident, you won't need to sponsor the baby. Your partner will need to notify CIC about the change in family, but your baby will be a Canadian citizen by descent and you can apply for a certificate of citizenship.

Like the others said, there is nowhere to include an unborn baby, because he/she won't 'count' as far as immigration are concerned until they are born. Hopefully you'll be all sorted and back home by then, anyway! C

Congratulations, by the way! :)

How could immigration ask you to put a baby on a form that is not yet born????They cant(what if something happened, god willing nothing ever does). How would you determine the sex if you didnt want to know?

i was pregnant and submitted my forms the day before our son was born...

while it isn't necessary to mention the baby in the forms we did as we thought it went towards substanuating (sp?) our claim...

under children we put "baby boy due xx/xx/xxx"

during the processing they did ask for proof of birth of our (canadian born) son... we provided that...

our case was thru in 4m when the 30% rate for our office (kingston) was 7m... so we went thru very quickly... I am not sure if they expedited the processing at all because of the newborn in the picture...

regardless if you put the baby on the form or not, i suspect you are going to mention it in your relationship discussion and, as mentioned, you will need to notify CIC when he/she is born and likely provide birth record...

hope that helps some...

I'm one of those second-class Canadian citizens - I was born abroad to Canadian parents, so my child must be born in Canada to be an automatic citizen. The rule changed sometime last year.

I would really rather not risk time apart from my partner around the birth and with the newborn (its our first!), so if his application is not approved in time, we will wait and add the baby to his application. I've been told that this is quite straightforward. He has his medical on June 22, so, assuming we have the baby on schedule in January, we will have about 6 months for CIC to add the baby before his medicals expire. Hopefully that will work out - I've spoken to an immigration lawyer who assures me it's very common, and usually only takes an additional few months (babies do not require extensive background checks!!)

And thank you!! We're thrilled.

Congrats on the baby. And yes you can add the little one as soon as she/he is born just make sure you get the birth certificate as fast as you can.

Aw - sounds like you're all sorted. Good luck with everything and will keep my fingers crossed that you get there in plenty of time to have your little one born in Canada (or that it all goes swiftly after adding them to the application in the US). :)
