Really depends on whether person is receiving treatment, how expensive it is and whether they’ve been hospitalized in the past 6 months.

If there are regular ongoing treatments required, then private insurance won't cover this. The traveler will need to pay for this out of pocket.

Google the the drug and "cost in Canada". That will give you an approximation.

Insurance coverage for non citizens, and non PR is the worst here in Canada. Even the most expensive plan will not cover anything. They come up with some excuse to not pay unless its an emergency situation and you have to rush to the ER. Out of fear of getting sued, they will cover in that case.

Otherwise on all occasions, you have always have to fill out a form, along with the doctors requisition, and then wait for the insurers doctors to approve it. Only then seek treatment. Most of the time, they don't approve. It's a big scam.

Doctors here are not comfortable seeing patients who are not covered by the provinces. They are very cold in that regard. Even if they see, they will first make the patient pay and a specialist will easily charge you $300 for the first visit. Because they know the insurers are not willing to pay.

If possible, try to get that care in your home country. But if there's an emergency, rush to the ER. They don't demand upfront payment there. Payment can be arranged later. You can also approach social services at the hospital. Just rush to the ER if it's an emergency. ER physicians are the best, they always lose out on a lot of money making opportunities compared to the other doctors.

Now, looks like yours is a pre-existing condition, and no insurer will cover it. That has been my experience.

The best insurance plans for non citizens and non PR is one that a school, or university arranges. Those are group plans, so the insurer pays most of the time.

I hope the person is in school.

All the best !!
