Hi all,

I am currently a PR and my citizenship is under processing. It has been 7 months since the "in process" has been stated on the website of CIC.
Now, I am unemployed. I was graduated from the school and now is looking for a job.

The questions:
1. Can I go abroad and reside in other countries for over 6 months while waiting for the decision of my citizenship?
2. Can I sponsor my husband at the unemployed status which has been over 6 months?
3. If I can successfully pass the investigation and be a sponsor, then, do I have to stay in Canada until my husband get his PR?
4. What if I get a job offer abroad after submitting the sponsorship&PR for my husband or after the approval of the investigation of the sponsor, can I work abroad until he gets the PR?

Please advise.
Any comments are appreciated.

Thank you.

Hey there :)

To answer your questions:

1. Can I go abroad and reside in other countries for over 6 months while waiting for the decision of my citizenship?

Yes you can.....BUT.....in the past 5 years, how many years were you OUT of Canada? To maintain PR, one is required to be in Canada for at least 2 years out of every 5 rolling years. If this is your first time going out of Canada since the past 5 years, then yes you're fine....you are allowed to be outside of Canada for over 6 months while waiting for the decision of your Canadian citizenship application.

***BUT*** for sponsorship purposes, there's another story. Pls see my answer below for questions 3 & 4.

2. Can I sponsor my husband at the unemployed status which has been over 6 months?

You can. But are you on welfare? You cannot sponsor anyone if you're on welfare.

If you're unemployed but NOT on welfare, then yes you can sponsor.

CURRENTLY (because you're still PR), you would have to stay in Canada during the whole course of your sponsorship application, if the application had already been submitted.

However.....soon you're gonna get your citizenship, and a citizen is allowed to reside out of Canada as his/her spouse's PR application is still being processed. However the catch is that you must demonstrate to the CIC that you will eventually move back to Canada once your husband's PR application is approved. How do you do this? Well you can show an employment offer (may or may not be applicable to you) from a company in Canada, proof that you have an active Canadian bank account, credit card, driving licence, health card, etc. You can also write a letter, explaining your future plans in Canada with your family. Testimonials (stating their awareness of your plan to return to Canada upon your husband's becoming PR) from close relatives and friends will help too.

I suggest that you wait till you get your citizenship, before submitting the sponsorship application..... :).

thanks fandv.
Awesome..your answers are exactly I am looking for. VERY precise and clear. Thank you again.

I just checked the citizenship timeline of others on this forum.
Some people submitted the citizenship application later than my submission, however, they already received the notice of the test date.

MY citizenship application timeline:

The application was received: April 4, 2013
Stat the processing: July 4,2013

Now(Feb 16,2014), the status still shows "in process". Don't know how long it's going to take for the whole process.
I am worried about the unusual timeline, since others already received the notice of the test date.

Any suggestion?

Glad to help! :)

When dealing with the CIC, it's better to assume that they don't operate in a logical/sequential manner....that way you get less stressed out ;D . It's just that the ways they do things, are sometimes a mystery.....

My own citizenship application was submitted in Feb 2003, and I got the notice of the test date in November 2003, so that took 9 months (the test itself actually took place in Dec 2003). Currently it's been 10 months since you applied, so I think it's still pretty normal...I believe you should get the test date notice pretty soon....

Have you tried calling the CIC to inquire about the status of your application? The number is 1-800-242-2100.

It's been over 10 years since I applied for my citizenship, so I really don't know how the test date notice is sent (whether by email or snailmail) nowadays. However I know that CIC officers sometimes incorrectly type people's email address, causing some people not to receive important emails. So by calling them you can ask them whether they recently sent you the test date notice, and whether or not it was sent to your house or to your email address.... =)

Thanks fandv.
I will phone CIC to inquire the status of my application. Today is the family day here. I will phone them tomorrow.

Does anyone know that do CIC record the process and show it on the status page(webpage) after they sending out the notice mail?

I just checked my status on CIC website.
They mailed me the "discover Canada" and it was stated on the webpage.
However, after that, there is only one sentence mentioned that the starting process data was July 4, 2013.

Wish I can receive the notice of the test date soon.

Perhaps you can write a post in the citizenship forum, asking about that.........someone should be able to clarify =)
