PR Renewal

Hi all,

Hopefully someone can shed some light for me regarding this matter.

I became a PR in August 2007. After that I stayed in the country a month working for my father and went back to my country in September WITHOUT my card to finish my on-going university studies.
Since my card never arrived, I returned to Canada in January 2008 to take new pictures (As the card had issues with my current picture and that’s why it never arrived in the first place) and I received the card on Feb 2008. I stayed in Canada doing a university internship until April 2008 and went back to finish my degree.
I finished, and came back for good in March 2011 and have been here ever since. I have now to renew my card before the expiration date of Feb 2013. I have a steady job and filed income taxes for last year in February.

I foolishly just noticed this today and I am planning to get married this month to sponsor my husband.

The questions are the following:

1. Will I have any problems renewing my PR status?
2. Should I wait until I’m married to send my renewal so it reflects my new marital status?
3. Will I lose my job if I don’t get renewed?

1. Just make sure you have more than 730 days in the past 5 years at the time you apply. More is better. Can you prove when you left in 2008? If you can not, it would be better for you to wait to renew until May 2013. By that time, you will have 790 days in the past 5 years and I assume you have a passport stamp from arriving in 2011. The reason for all this is because if you are very close to the limit, they are more likely to pick your application for a residency questionnaire which means your renewal will take forever. It is better to wait a couple of months longer to apply.

2. Doesn't matter.

3. No, you are still a PR even if your card expires. When you landed in 2007, you didn't have a card. You did not get one until 2008. Still you were a PR. Same thing if your card expires. You are just a PR without a card. It is not a big deal.
