PR Extension Necessary While Waiting For Citizenship?

Greetings,

My wife's permanent residency card expires on July the 15th. We should have started her citizenship application process sooner, but that's water under the bridge now.

1. Is it necessary to renew her PR card while we wait for her citizenship application to be approved, or do we have other options? E.g. Does she have any type of implied residency status while she waits for citizenship approval? Does she have six months' visitor's time once her PR card expires, or can she apply for temporary residency (Extension of Authorization to stay in Canada as a visitor) immediately? Can she return to the U.S. to visit with family while she waits for approval (she doesn't need to, but could if it's an option)?

2. Does she lose her OHIP coverage once her PR card expires? (Her current OHIP card is valid through 2017, but I presume she may only entitled to services while a permanent resident or citizen.) She's not presently working, so we're not concerned about that. But she is receiving routine medical treatment.

3. If it's necessary or recommended to renew her permanent residency concurrent to applying for citizenship, does this require a full application including all fees, documents, and proofs of relationship such as we submitted the first time we applied for her PR?

Thanks very much for your help and advice.

She doesn't lose her PR status when the PR card expires so she doesn't have to apply for any visa or permission to stay.

She shouldn't lose her OHIP or anything else. There is no law in Canada that states that a PR must renew their PR card upon expiry. However, it has been on the increase that people are asked for it, for example when renewing a drivers license or health card, applying for a job etc.

However, she would definitely need her PR card for travel.

If you are not planning on leaving Canada, then you do not need to renew her PR card. However, keep in mind that the processing time for citizenship can stretch out for years and the processing time for a new PR card is around 3 months. It would be better to renew the PR card in regards to sudden travel etc. It only costs $50. You can find the application forms here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/prcard.asp
