How long after getting PR card are people allowed to stay outside Canada without losing their status, and what are the cases that make people lose PR status in general?

if you got your PR card less than 5 years ago, then you would only be allowed back into Canada if it is possible to make two years (in Canada) by the time 5 years comes up.
If you have your PR card longer than 5 years, then they look at the last years and see whether you had at least 2 years of stay within the last 5 years.

You must be ready to prove your 2-years stay in Canada during the past 5 years. It is your responsibilty to convince the immigration that you were in Canada for 2 years. They may ask documentary proof. You are also supposed to file income tax returns for those 2 years according to Canadian law if you stay for more than 6 months in Canada. You dont have to live continuously for 2 years in Canada, all days during the past 5 years when you are physically presennt in Canada will be counted. It is therefore important to keep documentary proof of your presence in Canada.
