PR card NOT needed if you NEVER go outside of Canada after an initial entry?

A crazy question, it seems, but would make you ponder.

I have done an one-day soft-landing and managed to clinch my PR card and have it in my hand now.

I am currently outside of and about to enter Canada.

Some other countries - Singapore and Australia come to my mind - denote permanent residency (PR) card/visa as more like *re-entry* right, without which one CANNOT come BACK IN the country after its expiration.

So, my question is what if I have NO intention whatsoever of going outside of Canada after my initial entry. Would I still ever need PR card, let alone renewal of it?

Intriguing statements from some web sites:
"You don’t need a valid PR card to apply for citizenship. You can apply with an expired PR card."

"A PR card's expiration date does not indicate that the holder's status as a permanent resident has expired, or will expire, on that date. It is the date after which the card must be replaced with a new card."

For things like provincial health insurance coverage and driver license, you might need a valid PR card.

Technically, no. But having a valid one *may* make your life easier at times, as it is a strong form of ID and likely your only ID that proves your permanent status in Canada.

You may have business travel. Family issues abroad.

I never got my PR card. All I am using is my landing paper from the 90's.

I assume you have a visa-exempt passport, or you don't travel outside Canada?

He is an American, came thru with out being report after a absence of 25+ years. He never got a PR card because they were not in existence when he supposedly landed years ago

Ok, yeah... then US passport and landing paper is enough. US citizens are likely the only non-Canadians who can get away without a PR card, and yet still travel abroad since they do not need an ETA
