Hi,

My PR card is expiring in January (just noticed ...) and I was wondering if I need to renew it since I've already applied for canadian citizenship (about a year ago).
I realize it can take another year or more for me to get the citizenship, and I need to travel out of Canada regularly but then I read somewhere that when I come back to Canada from abroad I can just show my landing papers (which never expire), my expired PR card and some letter from Citizenship Canada showing I've applied for the citizenship. Of course this is more complicated than just showing my PR card when I cross the border, but then I don't want to pay $50+ or whatever the cost is , plus waste my time doing it, plus maybe mess up the citizenship application, knowing that I may get my citizenship in just a few months.

Let me know what you think, I'd appreciate some advice on this.

Applying for a new PR card will not delay your citizenship application in any way. They are unrelated applications and not processed by the same people. If you are visa exempt, you can travel with an expired PR card, just showing your passport when you board the plane and your expired PR card when you arrive at Canada immigration. Immigration may hassle you for not bothering to renew your PR card though and the airline may possibly request that you buy a return ticket.
