Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of a pickle, and I've been a lurker on this forum before as I've found it very helpful, and hoping someone could advise me or assist me here.

I had done my landing in Canada and received my PR Card, but returned back to the UAE with the full intention to eventually wrap things up and settle down in Canada prior to my PR Card expiring. In the meanwhile, while I am back in the UAE, my mother recently only just has fallen sick and is now a cancer patient, and is my dependent.

I've most definitely not had my days to even renew my PR card done as I returned to the UAE after my landing, but my intention was to re-enter Canada before the expiration of my PR Card and then settle permanently.

Now my PR card is going to be expiring this October, and I'm desperate to hold onto it, but at the same time I can't settle in Canada just yet due to my mom's health just at this moment. I am wondering is there any way that my expiry of my PR card can be extended by a year or so just so I can get a little more time to settle things here and ensure my mother gets the care here that she needs before I do make the move.
What are my options, if any! Are there any grounds for appeal to extend my PR card validity at all?

Any advice or help would be appreciated immensely.
Thanks.

There is no extension mechanism for PR cards. When it expires, and you wish to return to Canada, you will need to apply for a Travel Document. This may be refused if they don't consider your circumstances justify H&C exemption from the residency obligation requirements. A quick read through the other posts in this section will give you the alternatives, along with risks involved.

As mentioned, there is no way to extend PR card validity. Even with a valid PR card now, you would still face being reported upon entry to Canada for not meeting the residency obligation.

You will need to apply for a PR Travel Document on H&C grounds after your PR card expires and you want to return. So make sure to gather all evidence of your mother's condition that you think may help (doctor assessments, proof of her being dependent on you, hospital visits, etc).

If the PR TD is refused, you can then appeal it. If the appeal is denied, you would lose PR status.
