PR Card Expiration Query

Hello, my Canada PR would be expiring in March 2024. I'm currently based in the US and due to the borders being closed last year during Covid, I couldn't travel to Canada. After my PR status got activated in March 2019, I haven't travelled to Canada.
If I land in Canada after March 2022, would I be able to enter with PR status? Also, can I submit the PR card renewal application this year itself before my card expires in 2024?
Thanks!

Yes, you can enter in March 2022.

You will need to wait until you have 730 days of physical residency in Canada within the last 5 years before you can submit the application to renew your PR card. The renewal application can be submitted up to 9 months before your PR card expires. So no, you will not be able to submit it this year.

Note that travel for PRs to Canada from the US was possible all of last year and pretty much all of 2020 as well. The border restrictions did not impact PR holders.

Thanks for the quick reply! Sorry but even after March 2022 (say August 2022), I would be able to enter on PR status. Correct?

Yes, you'll definitely be allowed to enter. At that point you will no longer meet the residency requirement since you will have been outside of Canada for more than 3 years. The longer you wait to return, the higher the chances become that CBSA may report you for failing to meet the residency requirement at which point you'll have to appear at a hearing to argue why you should be able to keep your PR status. However the chances of being reported if you enter in August 2022 are very low. Note that if you wait until August 2022 to enter, you will then need to remain in Canada for 730 days (i.e. 2 years) before you will be able to submit the application to renew your PR card.

Hello,
Please could you let me know your status? I am in a similar boat. Landing date is March 2020 and 5 years will be competed in March 2025. The PR card will expire in July 2025. I just want to know if we move let say by April/May 2023, would they question us since we will not move RO and would have to make up for the remaining time?
