PR Card date and PR obligation question

Hi All,

I have a question regarding fulfilling PR requirements for renewal/citizenship.

My family and I (principal) landed in Canada in July 2011 but were issued PR cards after almost 10 months. The date of expiry on the PR cards are based on the issue date after 10 months of landing. I am currently outside canada - now my question is two fold
1. Do they consider the landing date for calculating the 2 years stay in he 5 year period or the date of PR issue

2. Till what month / year can I stay out of canada and enter canada without any issue ( say my expiry date on PR is April 2017)

I would appreciate any help on this front. Though I plan to be in Canada as soon as I finish up wrapping up my property sale which is taking time given the paper work one has to go thru in India.

They start counting from the day you landed as a PR but once you have been a PR for more than 5 years, they always look at the past 5 years. In order to meet the 730 residency requirements (2 years), you may stay outside Canada for up to 3 years (1095 days) in the 5 year period.

I landed in July 2010 and applied for the PR 6 weeks ago only. now thats it has been issued but not delivere, Would the commencement date be July2012???

Always look back 5 years from the date you signed your PR renewal application. In those immediate past 5 years, you should have been here atleast 2 years (i.e. atleast 730 days).

So, if you signed your application July 29, 2012, then CIC will look at the period between July 29, 2007 and July 28, 2012 to determine if you had atleast 730 days in that period. And the rules for counting days has been posted numerous times on here already - even a part of a day spent in Canada is counted as one full day for PR, a day trip to and back from the US is not counted etc etc.

I am still confused with your answers .. do they look at the PR expiration date to calculate the number of days left if I have to enter the country or will they look at my landing date record. both have a difference of 10 months. Will they count the 5 year back from April 2017 or the july 2016

If you are a PR for less than 5 years, they look at if you have already met the 730 days requirement in your first 5 years as a PR or if you still could. Say you haven't spent 730 days in Canada since your landing, they will look at how much time you have left until your 5 years landing anniversary. If you still have enough time to meet the requirements, you are ok.

If you are a PR for more than 5 years, they look at the past 5 years only.

So.. if you landed in July 2011, they will look at if you can meet the requirements in the period July 2011 until July 2016.
