I responded to a studio listing on craigslist from this Indian in Toronto before I flew from India. And like an idiot I emailed the copy of my PR card on his request.
He stopped answering my calls after I reached toronto.

What can he possibly do with my PR card info?
And how should I protect myself? I have his address and full name.

I'd probably inform CIC as a precaution, although I very much doubt that anything can/will be done about it. What *could* anyone do about it?

As long as he has no other info (SSN, bank details) about you, I wouldn't worry too much.

More generally, and for others who might come across this post in the future: DON'T give photocopies of your PR card to ANYONE other than government agencies which specifically request it. Not even an employer. Some employers may request to see your PR card (they shouldn't, but unfortunately they do - an SSN is all that's required). If an employer does ask to see your card, remind them that it's a travel document and not a proof of PR. Show it to them if they insist, but they have no reason to photocopy it.

What else could be a proof of permanent residency?

Your signed CoPR is the official proof of your permanent residency.

But your employer doesn't need to see any of this - just your SIN. You can't get a permanent SIN without proving to Services Canada that you're a permanent resident. Temporary SIN's start with a 9, so the employer will know if you're not PR.

My current employer asked for my sin number after i accepted the offer, and when i started work - hr kept emailing me that they need to see proof of eligibility to work in canada..they were only satisfied after they saw the pr card.

You have a SIN that doesn't start with 9 I assume? Sounds like they're paranoid or don't understand the system (or both). It's not uncommon from what I've heard, and it's usually easier just to play along and show them.
