Me and my family obtained PR status in 2009. We are required to stay 2 out of 5 years from 2010-2015 to keep our PR.

However, I'm studying full time in a university outside of Canada and is unable to fullfill residency obligations. Is it possible to apply for exemption based on my current circumstances?

No - exemptions are not granted for education purposes since you are making a choice to study outside of Canada. If you want to retain your PR status, you must meet the 2 out of every 5 year residency obligations.

You are required to stay 2 years in the 5 year period after you landed so from 2009 landing date until 2014 landing date anniversary. If your family returns to Canada now and meets the requirements, your spouse can sponsor you for PR again if you end up losing yours.
