Quick question,
Lets say I get the PR.
I land.
And I apply for the Sin or whatever else, but I need to go back home for lets say 2 months to finish up work etc.
So how does this count towards getting into the health system?

I know for toronto you have to wait 3 months.
So does the three months count from the time you land?
From the time you get the Sin?
Do you have to be there for three months to get into the system? Or its only when I come back for good will the three months start?
Just wondering.
Thanks

AND

can you apply for your SIN on a saturday?

The reason i am asking is that i am gonna visit my hubby next month. So the ticket is bought. But what if they ask for the passport before that? then i am screwed cause my intend is to go for three days and not stay on but if they request the passport before then I can use the already bought ticket to land and then come back , resign job get rid of car apartment etc. (of course its highly unlikely it would happen...but maybe I will be super lucky! we gotta have hope right?

I believe the waiting period starts when you land. And you can do the SIN by mail if you want. The Service Canada locations in my area are only open M-F, 8 until 4

Actually - for Ontario you need three months of physical presence to quality for health care (OHIP). You won't really be able to start accumulating those days until you return. And the two months you're away won't count towards the three month total.

I did not have to account for my days in Ontario when I applied, which was right after I landed. I was out of the country and out of the province for several weeks after I applied while I waited for my health card to be mailed. I received my card in the mail 3 months almost to the day after I landed.

Wow Allison -

Sounds like you got lucky. I have several friends (Canadian born) who took overseas jobs for several years and when they returned to Ontario, they had to re-establish physical presence for three months before OHIP would cover them again. (This was 2-3 years ago.) Maybe they're not checking as closely these days...

In addition to the three month rule, the following rule also applies. But again, maybe they are not checking as closely these days.

"In the first 183 days (six months) after your OHIP application, you must spend at least 153 days in Ontario. To keep your coverage after that, you must spend at least 183 days in Ontario in any 12-month period."

Ooops. Should have provided a link. Here it is:

I looked it up after your first comment, scylla. Then I started thinking maybe I didn't do it right after I landed. But I am positive now that I did both OHIP and SIN during one trip to Service Canada with no problems.

this is fabulous news...so i guess i can mail in to get the health card also?

I'm the one that was unlucky getting OHIP. I tried to register OHIP 2 days ago, the officer asked me question about if I traveled anywhere and if I have a plan to travel somewhere in the first 6 month after landing. I didn't want to lie so I told the truth that I traveled to US for 3 weeks after my landing and I am going back to my country for another 4 weeks next week. She told me that then I am not eligible to register OHIP now. She asked me to come back after the trip and that I will have to wait another 3 more months until OHIP effective. I was upset but nothing I can do and I will just pay for my insurance for another 3 months.

As Skylla said that there is a rule "In the first 183 days (six months) after your OHIP application, you must spend at least 153 days in Ontario. To keep your coverage after that, you must spend at least 183 days in Ontario in any 12-month period."

Anyway I believe that many people will be lucky like Allison that the officer probably won't ask you anything about your trip and you will be able to register OHIP right away.

From my understanding, after I land I can go straight to Service Canada and apply for OHIP and get a SIN, right? And although I have to wait a bit for the SIN card, I will have a SIN and can work before the card arrives? And they will just automatically send me an ohip card when I am eligible (after 90 days)?

I won't be gone from Ontario more than the permitted time :)

I want/need to have a job asap :)

You have to go to ServiceOntario to apply for OHIP, but you can do it before you're eligible. I did it with about a month left in my waiting period, and got my OHIP card about a week before I was covered.

That's correct
