I have completed my undergrad from a canadian university and have been working with an open (post-grad) work permit for the last 18 months.

I was recently layed-off and I'm currently looking for a new job.

Is there any point in trying to claim Employee Insurance? I'm 25 and have no dependents, and I can support myself for a while. I'm not sure how it works, but is it going to affect my PR application in anyway? (going to apply after 2 year work exp).

There's no reason not to apply for EI. You've paid into the system, you're on an open work permit and are willing/able to pursue new employment, and it has no impact on a PR application.

On the other hand, if you deplete your savings, that could create a problem for a PR application (depending on which program you apply through, some have a "proof of funds" requirement).
