Hello All,

Anyone have ideas of how they will transition their loved ones once they arrive in Canada?
It's been burning me up to decide on the best way to do this, and less stressful for my wife.

I really don't know what I should do...
I know she will be sad leaving all of her family in NJ/NY - with only an uncle here. I know they will visit her, and her mom will probably come and stay a bit.

The NY/NJ lifestyle is different, from Toronto. So time to "acclimatize" to a Canadian lifestyle will be a process by itself.

Has anyone thought of this?

Cheers

Ryan
Well the burden of making the change a positive one really relies on your loved one... they do have to be responsible for their own happiness.

It's not easy leaving friends and loved ones behind, so your job will be to make your wife comfortable here... you know get stuff to prep for her arrival. Be prepared to offer her lots of support as she transitions over. And, be a good guide... you don't want to overwhelm her with everything Canadian... but you know explaining cultural norms, helping her to be independent, so getting a bank account set up, street maps so she can move around easily... day trips to fun places... that sort of thing...

I wouldn't stress too much and enjoy the process... this will just be a boost to your marriage and it will help you grow closer together.

i have been thinking of the same thing Ryan...its gonna be hard for my husband he has lived his whole life in Trinidad and its going to be a major change. I dont want to overwhelm him. I think its good now that he comes within summer weather so he can slowly adjust to the cold. I agree with anxiouswifey little day outings showing them around would help.

Like Anxiouswifey and triniluv2117 suggested, I would also recommend you go with the smaller things first like sight seeing, day trips, tour around the city, visiting friends and family (your side as well), etc. Or maybe ask her what she will like to do or ask her to go online and look up what there is to do around the city and pick where she would like to go or what she would like to do and so on.

I don't think she will have such a hard time though coming from NY/NJ although TO is different in many ways. I think Anxiouswifey and triniluv2117 spouses will have a harder time adjusting to the Canadian life style just because Guyana and Trinidad is so much more different than North America.

Just want to say good luck with the transition for you guys.

Good Morning All,

ECAS says decision made!!

When I looked to track our package on the DHL site, it says it has been in Guyana since the 17th. I told hubby to go and see DHL this morning to see if it reach! I will keep you posted.

But for now, I am so freaking excited, and I just can't contain my happiness!!

It is always hard for the person coming and the person they are coming to.

My hubby was in NY before coming to Canada and at least finds Canada to be cleaner. In NY he had his sister, cousins, family. Here it is just him and I. There are sometimes when he gets home sick for sweet TNT but not NY. He was only in NY for 10 months. There is a large west indian community where we are so he really just misses his mom and dad and brothers and sisters.

He is working full time and has started to make his own friends and have independence which is great. I think men need to feel that they are contributing and being the man instead of being taken care of.

It is also helping that the weather is getting nicer. He thinks it is funny that Canadians are so happy to see the sunshine and warm weather. I told him after a couple of winters here he will appreciate it as much as us Canadians - he only has seen one.

Good luck and congratulations again.

Thank you all!!! It's a great feeling!! We already booked flights... So they will be here next week... I am so happy to be finally through this process. It's like a ton of weight lifted off your shoulders... The people who are on here waiting much longer than me are the true champs, because this process will knock you down if you can't endure.

I am going to keep a check on the forum to see the updates from our mini POS team...but, I am looking forward to the days when checking ECAS and coming to the forum are no longer my daily habits.

I thank all of you for encouraging me... it was a very difficult process as I lost my mom unexpectedly right at the start of it... and so while I am normally a very positive person, I got so sad and lonely going through it... and what kept me going was coming here and realizing I am not alone in my struggles... so thank you very much!!!

I look forward to reading landing stories in the near future!!!
