Hi, I’m the sponsor for my wife who’s outland at the moment. She is the principal applicant. If I recall, the immigrant who lands the first time in Canada needs to stop at the airport at one of the officials office (either immigration or customs or police?) to check immigration documents and go through some interview?

Could you confirm this step please?

The reason I’m asking this is that I live in Alberta and when times comes to book the plane tickets it could be challenging to find some reasonable prices here, one option is to make a stop through Montreal, but honestly I don’t like that airport and feel that they can give some troubles and could delay the trip to Calgary. My preference would be to travel from Europe direct to Calgary, even if there is a delaying issue we’re home. If it’s confirmed that, for one the immigrant has to go through a document check, and for second, it’ll happen at the first port of entry; then I will try to avoid Montreal and try to book for Calgary.

Thanks.

Yes after the PA lands they will have to go through the process of declaring themselves as landing as PR (immigration officers checking COPR, Goods to follow & accompanying custom formalities and if the PA wants to do it at the airport itself then SIN too). This would be at the first port of entry to Canada.

Do you know if I can accompany her when she's inside with them at the interview? language sometimes might be a problem for a first time in the country (the context).

Its not an interview. They just ask you basic things like do u have a dependent or been criminally convicted. Then check if all docs are in order and move on. I am not too sure if you are allowed because all this happens at the immigration barrier.

The challenge might find with Flying direct to Calgary is that believe other than from the US there are very few direct international flights , a couple from UK, Paris, Frankfurt , but not much else, so keep that in mind. Alternatives to Montreal could be to transit via Toronto or Vancouver.

As for being present at immigration landing do not think it is generally possible for a non traveller to go airside. If somebody needs a translator as far as understand immigration have procedures to cater for such a scenario. So a good approach is ensure the person landing has a letter in English that they can show to CBSA explaining they are landing and the need for a translator, not an unsual approach.
