Police Certificate

Hello,
I am a U.S. citizen but have have living and working in Ontario via Work Permit. I know that I need to get a police certificate from the U.S. but want to be sure I am going about it the right way since we have a strict timeline. I know that my police record is clear.
Anyone who was in my boat, what did you do? Am I able to just go to the local police station of where I used to live (Buffalo, NY) or do I actually have to go through the FBI (fingerprints and all).
Any clarity is appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you. I figured out that I need to obtain fingerprints (can do this in Ontario) then have them sent to the FBI via mail. I was able to complete an application online through the FBI website - need to send the confirmation email with the fingerprint card - to decrease the wait time. Should have certificate in 4-5 business days once they receive my fingerprint card via mail. Thank you for your time.
