Police Certificate Validity Period

I'm getting ready to submit my PR application and wanted to check the following things:

1. How recent does the certificate need to be, the check list says within one year of issue.
2. What happens if the certificate expires between sending the application and getting notice that they have received my application?

I'm hoping to send my application in the next week but my Police Certificate expired on 11th Jan 2014, should I be worried?

They will ask for a police report for every country that you have lived in for more than 6 months for the last 10 years, or since you were 18. Depending on your age, you will do either or.
