So is it okay to apply now? My closed work permit will expire on Jan 20, 2017 so it's not due to expire within 4 months. I am planning to return on Jan 3, 2017 which is 2 weeks before my WP expiration date. I am thinking of apply only a TRV and then apply a BOWP mid September. My main goal is to secure a TRV while I'm still in Canada to avoid any issue re-entering. What are the chances of getting a TRV if my current WP is expiring in about 5 months? When I tried the CIC eligibility tool it says that if my existing WP is expiring soon (not sure how soon is soon) then I have to extend it first before applying a TRV. Thanks!

Don't over complicate your case. Apply as soon as the time comes when you only have 4 months left on your permit. That's a rule.
I got my TRV while permit expires in 6 months. No issues.

Look on the bright side, at least you are already in Canada my friend ;D

Apply 4 month before it expires and you wont have any issues.

CIC is lagging in completing paper based applications, that is for sure. The timeline in the recent year has increased from 10-12 months to 12-16 months

*copy of Provincial Nomination Certificate
*AOR for PR application
*Photo digital
*IMM5710E 2016 APPLICATION FOR WORK PERMIT
*passport
*copy of old work permit
*copy of Medical Exam
*155$ fee

If you apply online, all forms and requirements listed in a checklist where you just download and upload it.

however, I check my previous work permit application submitted December 17, 2014 and got my Work Permit January 22, 2015 so was less than a month processed.
