I got my ITA yesterday (8-Jan-2021). I would like to have some insight on the following topics and confirm if my understanding is correct.

1. Deadline of submitting full application: This is written in the ITA message which listed 8-Apr-2021. Is there any special circumstance that allows extension?

2. Processing time: Assume I submit my full application on 8-Apr-2021 and fingers crossed. Is it reasonable to assume a processing time of 6 months? I learnt that different streams (e.g. PNP, CEC and FSW) have different processing times and it seems CEC has most delays.

3. Stay in Canada requirement after PR: Most important question. I have a job here in another country and I will need to resign if I move to Canada. However, I like my job and would like to quit as late as possible. I learnt that the requirement is stay in Canada not less than 3 years since 5 years of getting PR, is this true?

If this is true, then assume I get my PR on 8-Oct-2021. I still work until 8-Oct-2023 and move to Canada. Does this plan work?

4. Double taxation: If the above plan is OK, what about taxation? Do I need to file tax return to Canada from 8-Oct-2021 to 8-Oct-2023 when I am working in another country?

1. No. Extensions are not possible.
2. You should assume it will take longer than six months due to COVID-19. The six month target processing time was before the pandemic.
3. You need to live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 rolling years to meet the residency requirement and keep your PR status. Yes, your plan works.
4. You will only file taxes in Canada when you are living in Canada and are a tax resident.

By the way, do I need to have an address in Canada during the 5 rolling years in order to keep my PR status?

Hi Scylla, as to taxation, you mentioned "You will only file taxes in Canada when you are living in Canada and are a tax resident." My understanding is that when I work outside Canada but keep the PR, I am a "factual resident". And because the place I am working (Switzerland) has a tax treaty with Canada, I can be considered as deemed non-resident. Do you think this logic is right?
