I got admission into the University of Manitoba Canada. I want to process my husband and 1kid to accompany me, which means family visa of 3. Am from Nigeria; please I need your guidance on the ratio amount my proof of fund will be, like the expected figure from immigration. And will the proof of fund still required at the point of entry into Canada?

Moreso, I am currently pregnant, won't it hinder my entry to Canada after is hopefully granted? And how's antinatal expenses like international students? Please kindly give your best guidance to a sister! Thanks in anticipation

You want to pay first year tuition plus show funds of around $14k minimum to support your family. That is a minimum so you probably want to show a lot more as cost of living and rent is high. If you are pregnant and pass the medical, you will also want to show funds for daycare. Funds don’t include cost of your airfare. Yes, you want to show funds at POE. Husband and child’s visas are not guaranteed so make a plan if you come alone.

Pregnancy will delay processing as you all need to pass the medical. You need to take an x-ray and pass the medical. Have you all completed the medicals? How will you go to school right after the birth? You need to go to school or your permit is cancelled.

For health care, look at the U of M site for healthcare for international students. Get on daycare lists. Few accept newborns, and most people get on waiting lists before a baby is born.

Please does it means the proof of funds directly stands for the tuition fees or separate fund? And does it mean I can't deferred admission during the period of nursing baby? Or is it that I deferred the now, pause the immigration stage and continue later after delivery, and won't I need to reapply for admission later when am ready?

You need to pass the medical and IRCC will know you are coming to give birth so that will weaken your application. Why don’t you wait to give birth and then apply. Ask for deferral. Will you even be able to start your studies before the birth? If not, then give birth, defer. Assume your program starts in January or May 2024.

International students in Manitoba have to purchase private insurance through the school. Many of these types of plans will not cover pregnancy if you are pregnant before the coverage starts. You also typically need to be a full-time student for a certain period of time before being able to take medical leave unless it is an unanticipated medical emergency. You will need to verify whether this is the case if you get a study permit. Processing for students from Nigeria often takes close to around 6 months. So assume you are applying for winter or spring admission next year. You would have to be a full-time student for at least a semester if you want to take time off for maternity leave. It would not make sense for a school to allow you to start a semester and then allow you to take time off for maternity leave after a month or so. You will need to show that you have the extra savings in addition to your tuition to support a family given the cost of living in Canada.
