Physician and Epidemiologist

Hi,

I live in Colombia but i would like to live in Canadá, I'm a physician and i have a master degree in epidemiology, with 5 years of experience, can i apply as a skilled worker? Wich would be the best option to get a job in Toronto? Or could i find a job there in other fields, not in health?

Have you researched Canada immigration, start with Express Entry. You need your education assessed and take language tests. Focus on getting invited first. As for jobs, you need to figure out what you want to to and then look at different provinces and cities. You cannot work as a physician in Canada until you are licensed. Many IMGs never practice in Canada.

If you did your training in Colombia you will not be able to work as a physician unless you redo your residency after passing your licensing exams. There are only a certain amount of residency spots left over after a Canadian students have matched so getting a residency as an IMG is very competitive and many are not able to secure a residency after many attempts. If you want to continue working as a physician there are likely better counties to consider. Epidemiology is a tough field to get a job. The pandemic has made it easier but it is popular degree but only so many jobs available. Those with PhDs tend to have the upper hand when applying for jobs. How old are you? Your ability to find employment in Canada if you obtain PR will partially have to do with your work experience. If you have experience with well known international organizations or if you are well published that will certainly be more helpful.
