Hello all,

I have a question regarding the time required to stay in Canada as a Permanent Resident to qualify for the citizenship. I became a Permanent Resident graduating from my study here in Canada.

My new job requires me to be 2 months outside of Canada in a period of every 3 months. ( 2 months on, 1 month off rotation)

I wanted to know if the time I'm away, working for a Canadian company outside of Canada, would be counted toward the requirements for citizenship?

- Thank you.

No. Unless the following applies:

You can count time spent outside Canada toward the physical presence requirement for citizenship if you:

  • were a permanent resident employed in or with the:
    • Canadian Armed Forces
    • federal public administration
    • public service of a province or territory

However, it will probably be counted for your PR residency obligation as long as the job and company meet the eligibility requirements.

The possible issue with the residency obligation is whether IRCC considers whether the 2 month trips are considered business trips or as a temporary foreign assignment given business trips do not as I understand qualify towards the residency obligation. A 2 on 1 off rotation sounds like one of those fly in fly out roles but ultimately only a IRCC could say if RO time counts, citizenship time for sure as already highlighted would not count.

Also there is the issue that your job was never permanently in Canada but then got transferred to overseas.
