For a landline, you often don't have much choice. The old companies that used to have monopoly on landline like Bell in some areas or Telus in others do not have very good overseas packages compared to many smaller companies like Telehop. They do however offer a basic landline for a basic fee with unlimited local calling. If you would rather go with phone through internet like vonage, you can do that. It depends on the country you call the most if you save money or not. I looked into it and found that it would not be cheaper for me compared to having a Telus landline and Telehop for overseas calls.
With a landline through internet, you also have to take into account that when your internet is down, your phone is down but if you have a cell phone, that is probably ok for you. Your internet should not be down that much. Beware of making a long contract with your internet provider. Some will offer you a free gift if you make a 1-2-3 year contract with them but if the service is bad, it can be hard to get out of the contract.
For cell phone, I had a Bell cell phone and it was a bad deal for me. It all depends on your usage. You have to pick the company with the best plan for your personal use.
