Hi there. My spouse has applied for PR from WITHIN Canada. He received a congratulatory email from CIC saying that he'd be contacted for an interview in Etobicoke but today he received a cryptic phone call from CIC saying that there'd be 'associates' in our area soon and and to be prepared for a phone interview.

So what's going on? Is the Etobicoke interview being replaced by this? What is the phone interview mostly likely about? And we'd still have to go for a landing interview after it or...?

Hmm... sounds like a scam. Do not give out any personal information. Call CIC and ask if the other call(s) was from them. If they call again, ask for their name, employee ID and a number to call back. Then call CIC immediately yourself to verify.

Ack! That's disturbing...

Although they did tell him his email and ask him to confirm if it was correct.

I'll have to look into this. I've been googling like crazy and haven't come across anyone mentioning something similar.

Thanks!

The part that screams scam to me, is the fact they will have associates in the area...but there would be a phone interview?

If there will be associates in the area, why can't they just knock on his door?

An `associate' can make a phone call from anywhere!

Did he see the phone number of the caller ID? If so, can he match that with a CIC number?

I agree, I think it's a scam. Or they are finally following up with condition 51 checks? Doubtful.

If they call again ask them for their phone number so you can call them and ensure it's not a scam. Report them to the police and CIC as well once you have the #.

Not reliable. Scammers can spoof phone numbers so that the called ID looks legit.

Yep, forget about that slimy trick.

That is VERY alarming...how someone would know you were going through this process and phone you...

Make sure you are shredding your papers and stuff before throwing away in dumpsters...people go through that stuff and that's how a lot of scams start...

Yes, we were both confused by what the agent had said. But CIC can be confusing at times...

I'm just not unsure as to the point of it is, if it were a scam. They didn't get any information from him.

And no, we don't have caller ID.

Call the call centre and confirm. If they ask why you are calling, be straight up:

"I received a call from someone claiming to be from CIC, and with all the identity scams lately I wanted to follow up and confirm this is not a scam". Then ask the agent to confirm by going into your notes and reviewing them.

This definitely screams scam to me as well, and as other's said, it is not hard to get information on someone who is going through a PR application. Also, are you 100% certain the email from from CIC? Did you check your ECAS? Might also want to order GCMS notes.

@Jay0777,

Better to post your question in the CEC section and/or "work permit" section. Check your inbox for a reply. Did not post it here so as not to *hijack* the OP's thread.
