Hi everyone,
I'm looking for advice from anyone who has had a similar PGWP refusal or has experience with cases like mine.
My academic timeline:
My questions are:
I'm concerned that although I explained my academic history in detail, parts of it may have been misunderstood or overlooked.
Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I'm looking for advice from anyone who has had a similar PGWP refusal or has experience with cases like mine.
My academic timeline:
- Sept 2021: Started BSc Computing Science (Specialization) at the University of Alberta (full-time).
- May 2022: Required to withdraw after not meeting the required GPA.
- Sept 2022 – Apr 2023: Enrolled in Open Studies (not a degree program). I was advised to take 2 UAlberta courses and 2 Athabasca University courses each semester. Since Open Studies only allowed 2 UAlberta courses per term, I completed the remaining courses through Athabasca University for transfer credit to meet the admission requirements for a new degree.
- Sept 2023: Admitted into a new BSc (General), Major in Computing Science, Minor in Mathematics.
- Fall 2023 – Winter 2026: Maintained full-time status every semester until graduation.
My questions are:
- Has anyone had a similar pathway (Required to Withdraw → Open Studies → New Degree) and still obtained a PGWP?
- Did you pursue reconsideration, reapplication, or Judicial Review? What worked?
- Does IRCC normally treat Open Studies as part of the completed "program or programs" for PGWP eligibility?
- Is it worth hiring an RCIC or immigration lawyer to prepare a reconsideration request?
I'm concerned that although I explained my academic history in detail, parts of it may have been misunderstood or overlooked.
Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
